YMCA Soccer League 2007/08 Official Opens

A brand new soccer season is underway at the YMCA on Grand Bahama Island. On Saturday, November 24th an official opening ceremony took place on a beautiful sunny morning out on the YMCA playing fields. An opening prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. George L. Cumberbatch (Chaplin on Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors) and the National Anthem was sung by Miss Grand Bahama (Nathalie Brown). Mistress of Ceremony and YMCA Executive Director, Mrs. Karon Pinder-Johnson welcomed the many special guests, coaches, parents and players.

Brief remarks were made by Narissa Lockhart, a representative from Ministry of Youth & Sport. The visiting Guest Speaker was Anton Sealey, President of Bahamas Football Association from New Providence. Mr. Wildgoose, Y.M.C.A. Program Director gave honour to the coaches and players, and closing remarks came from Mr. Joseph Darville, the Y.M.C.A. Program Vice Chairperson. Read more – CLICK HERE

YMCA Soccer Registration Now Underway!

The YMCA 2007/08 Soccer League, which begins on November 17th at 10am is now registering. Our soccer programme is for boys and girls aged 4 to 14 years. The $45.00 registration fee includes your child’s Uniform T-Shirt and awards at the season end. The League runs Saturdays from 10 am to Noon.

Our Renovated Pool makes a SPLASH!

The YMCA swimming pool is new and improved and already, the masses of Grand Bahamians (particularly kids) are benefitting from the recent renovations that took place at the popular swimming pool.

“The pool has gone under major renovations,” said Johnson, Executive Director of the YMCA.

“We’ve implemented a number of tasks that once completed would make the pool look like brand-new.”

YMCA takes Lifeguard course to new level

The YMCA is taking its lifeguard and water safety program to another level with the introduction of its beach front, lifeguard certification course. In the past, the YMCA offered pool lifeguard certification courses, but now that course has been expanded to include beach front certification. This will allow Bahamians interested in being lifeguards not only at hotels or at pool side, but beach lifeguards. The course will be conducted by an international, certified, water safety and first aid CPR Instructor out of Alabama in the person of William Joseph Powers.

Terry Wildgoose is new Activities Director at the YMCA

If experience means as much as many people claim that it does, then Terry Wildgoose is the right man for the job of Activities Director at the YMCA.

No, Terry is not experienced in that capacity, per se, but having grown up in the YMCA, and having been both an athlete and a coach for almost every core sport there is, Terry indeed has what it takes to take up the challenge.

“I began my coaching career at the YMCA,” said Terry, during Wednesday’s press conference.

“Before that I was fortunate enough to have been a very good athlete and I played just about every sport in the country.

YMCA Summer Camp Curly Tail 2007

Starting June 25th and running until August 17th, let the YMCA be your choice for summer camp this year! Create wonderful memories of summer for your child by signing them up for summer camp with us.

Ages 3 – 13 years of age and weekdays from 8:30am to 5:30pm. Cost is only $80.00 a week (including lunches) OR $60.00 a week (without lunch)

What you get: swimming, baseball, judo, creative dance, obstacle course, track & field, arts & crafts, talent shows, academic drills, nutritional talks and more…

Disneys Pirates of the Caribbean II/III Cast and Crew donate computers to the YMCA

Grand Bahama Island – Pirates of the Caribbean III – At World’s End opened in theatres Friday, May 25th, two years after Disney filmed portions of sequels II and III on Grand Bahama. During their stay the Cast & Crew Charity Golf Classic took place and resulted in a great amount of monies generated which went toward buying items for the Grand Bahama Children’s Home, and toward the purchase of ten computers set to go toward the youth of Grand Bahama.

Raquel Oliver comes 1st in The Big Stage Show

On Saturday, April 28th The Big Stage Show held the final showdown at the YMCA in Grand Bahama. It was very entertaining with stiff competition! Despite the rallies going on throughout town a good crowd turned out to cheer on their favorite contestant.

The final 16 finalist were: Dudley Caproni, Ayfere, Sharede Taylor, Rappquelle, Trent Carter, All Stars, Alexus, Just Gina, Burnai Capron, Erica, Chase, Bobby Blatch, Trekeiece Douglas, Raquel Oliver, Keaira Watson, Naughty, and Dano Rolle.
Raquel Oliver won 1st place; the All Stars 2nd; and Chase was 3rd. Each of these winners will get a trip to Atlanta to compete in another Stage Show as well have earned studio time.

The Big Stage Show plans to return again next year and have created a Bahamian record label. Proceeds from admittance to The Big Stage Show went entirely to the YMCA.
