Y.M.C.A. Lifeguard Certification Course

Preliminary Swim Testing January 26th, 2008 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Preliminary outline:
- Applicant must be 18 years or older
- Applicant must be able to read and write English
- Applicant must be able to swim twenty eight (28) lengths of a 25 meter swimming pool. Ten Length freestyle, ten length breast stroke, and eight lengths mix freestyle and breast stroke in fifteen minutes
- Applicant must be able to swim twenty five meters retrieve a 10lbs dumbbell from ten feet of water and swim back on their backs with both hand on the dumbbell on his/her chest with the breast stroke kick in two minutes
Course outline: February 11th, thru 17th, 2008
- The Professional Lifeguard and injury prevention & patron surveillance and emergency preparation
- Rescue skills and Before providing care and rescue skills
- Breathing and cardiac emergencies, two rescuer CPR, AED and First Aid
- Injuries to Muscle, bones and joints and caring for head, neck and back injuries
- Caring for head, neck and back injuries
- Shallow and deep water line searches
- Final written exam and final skill scenarios
Fees:
- Preliminary assessment twenty dollars ($ 20.00)
- Course Fee two hundred and ninety dollars ($290.00).
A Successful Candidate is expected to :
- Must past the preliminary testing.
- Attend all sessions; session will include the class room, pool and beach.
- Be prepared and on time
- Participate in all exercises
Schedule:
Hours for programme are Monday thru Friday 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m, Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

YMCA Soccer League 2007/08 Official Opens

A brand new soccer season is underway at the YMCA on Grand Bahama Island. On Saturday, November 24th an official opening ceremony took place on a beautiful sunny morning out on the YMCA playing fields. An opening prayer was offered by Rev. Dr. George L. Cumberbatch (Chaplin on Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors) and the National Anthem was sung by Miss Grand Bahama (Nathalie Brown). Mistress of Ceremony and YMCA Executive Director, Mrs. Karon Pinder-Johnson welcomed the many special guests, coaches, parents and players.
Brief remarks were made by Narissa Lockhart, a representative from Ministry of Youth & Sport. The visiting Guest Speaker was Anton Sealey, President of Bahamas Football Association from New Providence. Mr. Wildgoose, Y.M.C.A. Program Director gave honour to the coaches and players, and closing remarks came from Mr. Joseph Darville, the Y.M.C.A. Program Vice Chairperson. Read more – CLICK HERE

The YMCA swimming pool is new and improved and already, the masses of Grand Bahamians (particularly kids) are benefitting from the recent renovations that took place at the popular swimming pool.
“The pool has gone under major renovations,” said Johnson, Executive Director of the YMCA.
“We’ve implemented a number of tasks that once completed would make the pool look like brand-new.”

No, Terry is not experienced in that capacity, per se, but having grown up in the YMCA, and having been both an athlete and a coach for almost every core sport there is, Terry indeed has what it takes to take up the challenge.
“I began my coaching career at the YMCA,” said Terry, during Wednesday’s press conference.
“Before that I was fortunate enough to have been a very good athlete and I played just about every sport in the country.
